NNTC Business Spotlight: Bibs & Boots Cafe in Bartlett, NE

Imagine being the great-grandmother of 28 and still showing up for work six days a week. That’s exactly what 88-year-old Dorothy Dexter, owner of Bibs & Boots in Bartlett, NE, does!

“It keeps her out of the bars,” long-time customer Rocky Finlayson of Central City jokes. Dorothy laughs and gives Rocky a friendly tap.

“I think people like to come here to eat and gab,” she says proudly.

And gab they do! Dorothy gives out plenty of hugs and handshakes on a daily basis, making Bibs & Boots feel like more than just a place to grab a meal.

While Dorothy is a mom and grandma to many, it’s her homestyle cooking that keeps customers coming back for more.

“We’ve got some mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and dead meat,” Rocky says of his lunch.

It’s actually a beautifully cooked beef roast, which is Dorothy’s Tuesday special.

Along with her daily specials, Dorothy serves a full menu featuring burgers on homemade buns and pies, including made-from-scratch favorites like lemon meringue.

With just over 100 people in town, Bibs & Boots has become a staple in the Bartlett community.

“It’s very nice having her in town where you can go up and get a quick meal,” said Mark Nordhues, Bartlett Village Board Member.

And after nearly 30 years in business, Dorothy plans to keep cooking, serving and welcoming customers for as long as she is able.
